RETI stands for Resource Efficient Trauma Intervention. RETI was designed as part of a multi-state National Institute of Mental Health R01 study to serve as a comparison condition for the implementation of TF-CBT in elementary, middle and high schools. RETI is an easy-to-learn, workbook-guided, modular CBT program.

RETI training is extremely brief—providers watch a 2-hour video that covers trauma screening, core treatment strategies, and a walk-through of the RETI workbook. This is followed by a 1-2 hour live Q&A with Dr. Jungbluth. No follow-up support or consultation was provided following this brief training in the NIMH study. Preliminary outcomes for treated youth showed large improvements in post-traumatic stress, depression and trauma-related painful thinking, as well as medium reductions in avoidance behavior. The final results of this trial, which also explores treatment mechanisms, implementation outcomes and cost effectiveness relative to TF-CBT, are expected in 2024.

The RETI program served as the starting point for the development of the FAST-Trauma program, which includes additional modules and resources and incorporates expert guidance to boost cultural relevance for underserved, marginalized youths and families. FAST-T was iteratively developed with extensive user engagement and piloting.

FAST-T includes:

  • A 2-page “snapshot” sharing key evidence-based strategies for overcoming post-traumatic stress.

  • Child, teen and caregiver workbooks

  • Modules for racial stress and trauma, geared to children, teens and caregivers

  • A module for LGBTQ+ identity stress

  • Guides for providers on how to conduct trauma screening and talk with youth about painful trauma memories.

FAST-T was rolled out across WA State in May of 2022 to increase access to trauma-specific care. You can find the freely available treatment resources and online provider training video at the FAST website: www.seattlechildrens.org/FAST
